The government has promised to put young people at the forefront of policymaking, with a revamped Home Affairs Bureau also including youth policies in its purview. As the new bureau's top official, Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak says young people must be given opportunities to pursue their dreams and succeed. The Examinations and Assessment Authority says more than 40 percent of candidates at local schools who sat the Diploma of Secondary Education exam met the minimum university entrance requirements. The head of a community college says he expects a further decline of up to to five percent in the number of students sitting the local university entrance exam. Professor L S Chan, the principal of HKU Space Community College, says a declining birth rate and a recent exodus of students means a shrinking number of candidates. Australia environment report sounds dire warning  Listenfacebook
A five-year government report has found Australia's environment is deteriorating due to climate change, resource extraction and other factors, prompting leaders to promise new laws and enforcement of them. The State of the Environment report also added political pressure on the government to set a more ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target when Parliament resumes next week for the first time since the elections in May. The previous conservative government received the report in December, but decided against making it public before the elections.
