Govt confident subdivided flat rules won't leave tenants homeless  Listenfacebook
The government says it is confident that its plan to get rid of poor quality subdivided flats will not leave residents homeless. As Elvis Yu reports, officials stressed there would be plenty of public housing available for them:

A rights advocacy group has welcomed the minimum standards for subdivided units. But the Society for Community Organisation says the minimum size should be calculated per person, and that eight square metres - the equivalent of 86 square feet - is only enough for one person and would be too small for a larger household. The group's deputy director, Sze Lai-shan, also said there should be an initial rent cap to prevent landlords from passing their renovation costs onto their tenants. She spoke to Elvis Yu:
CE hopes to get more mainlanders visiting HK  Listenfacebook
Chief Executive John Lee says he hopes that proposals to get more mainlanders to visit Hong Kong will "materialise soon". He had said in his Policy Address on Wednesday that the central government was proactively studying suggestions, including the resumption of multiple-entry visas for Shenzhen residents and expanding the number of cities that grant visas for weekly visits to the SAR. Financial Secretary Paul Chan says the government studied factors, such as property prices, housing supply and the city's economy, before relaxing the loan-to-value ratio for mortgages. The Institute of Human Resource Management has welcomed measures announced in the Policy Address to boost talent admission. These include adding another 13 universities to the Top Talent Pass Scheme and adding an extra 15,000 training spots to the Employees Retraining Board. But Roy Ying, who co-chairs the institute's advocacy and policy research committee, said there were still some gaps. He told Hailey Yip that the current policy focused on top-tier talent but employers were having difficulty filling frontline and technician-level positions:

A professor in geriatric medicine says a new pilot scheme to subsidise elderly welfare recipients to live in Guangdong is attractive to those who are healthy and fit but not ideal for those who cannot care for themselves. Jean Woo, from the Chinese University's Faculty of Medicine, was commenting on the CE's plan to have a three-year pilot programme for up to 1,000 elderly people on Comprehensive Social Security Assistance to receive HK$5,000 a-month to live in designated care homes in Guangdong. Professor Woo told Hailey Yip that it may be very difficult for the elderly who are sick or disabled to cope with a new environment:

China has reiterated its support for a "political settlement" to resolve tensions on the Korean peninsula. It made the comments after Pyongyang said its constitution now defined South Korea as a "hostile" state for the first time. Relations between the two Koreas have deteriorated since North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in January defined Seoul as his country's 'principal enemy' and said the North was no longer interested in reunification.
