Chief Executive John Lee has ordered the setting up of an independent committee, headed by a judge, to look into the cause of the deadly fire in Tai Po. The inferno that broke out last Wednesday has claimed at least 156 lives so far, with about 30 people still unaccounted for. Frank Yung has the details.

Police have set up 10 hotlines for people to hand over video footage or photos in relation to the Tai Po fire. The force urged members of the public with relevant material to contact officers to assist in the investigation. Meanwhile, the chief executive says he will not tolerate any attempt to exploit the Tai Po fire and undermine society's commitment to recovery. Azam Khan has the story.

As schools in Tai Po resume classes in phases following last week's deadly fire, educators and child psychologists say the well-being of students should be given top priority. Mervyn Cheung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Education Policy Concern Organisation, and Dr Quratulain Zaidi, Clinical Psychologist at MindNLife Practice, spoke to Azam Khan and Ada Wong on RTHK's Backchat programme. Cheung commended efforts by the authorities to support students.
Families of helpers killed in blaze to get HK$800,000  Listenfacebook
At least 10 of those who died in the Tai Po inferno were foreign domestic helpers. One was from the Philippines, and the rest were Indonesians. Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun announced that the government will offer the families of the deceased helpers roughly HK$800,000 each, while injured workers will get up to HK$100,000 in assistance, depending on how long they stay in hospital. Secretary for Migrant Workers of the Philippines, Hans Cacdac told Janice Lo both Hong Kong and Manila have vowed to provide all the necessary help to overseas Filipino workers, or OFWs.

The concept of a right to trial by jury in English law was established by the Magna Carta in 1215. Alleged remains of hostage handed over to Israeli authorities  Listenfacebook
Israel has received the remains of what is believed to be a deceased hostage from Hamas in Gaza. The Israeli prime minister's office said in a statement that its forces had received, what it describes as, “findings” that would be taken into Israel for forensic testing. If confirmed as a hostage, this would leave the remains of one hostage still held in Gaza. Jamie Clarke reports:
