US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says there's been "tremendous" progress in talks to finalise a peace plan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Now European counter-proposals to the US-backed peace deal are emerging following a lengthy meeting in Geneva. Summer influenza is easing from its peak, expert says

A health expert says the local influenza outbreak is coming down from the summer flu peak at 12 percent infection rate, but due to the cooler weather, it may take six to eight weeks for the infection rate to return to the baseline level. Non-emergency radiology services to require pre-payment

The Hospital Authority says it will start charging patients for non-emergency radiology services next year, as it tries to optimise its use of resources and reduce wastage. Under a three-tiered scheme, basic services such as X-ray scans will remain free of charge, while more complex procedures will cost between HK$250 and HK$500. Patients must also settle the payment 14 days ahead, or else the appointment will be cancelled. Elaine Kan, who chairs the Hospital Authority's Coordinating Committee in Radiology, explained to Henry Siu the rationale of the charging scheme:

Fifty of the more than 300 schoolchildren abducted from a Catholic school in Nigeria have escaped captivity and are now with their families. That's according to the local school authority. A total of 253 schoolchildren and 12 teachers are still being held by kidnappers. School kidnappings have come to define insecurity in Africa's most populous nation. Attending a wedding is fun, but it can also be a stressful experience with so many rules and norms to follow. Now a group of hospitality professionals in India are carving out a new market, by creating parties that have the allure of traditional weddings, but with none of the strings attached. They have been a huge hit among the middle class and those with spending power, and while some welcome the boost to the economy, others feel the fad is not sustainable once it's over.
