Conservation group urges govt to learn from pruning incident  Listenfacebook
A conservation group is calling on the government to follow through with its promise to give more training to workers tasked with pruning trees, after over a dozen hatchlings died when staff indiscriminately trimmed trees inside a protected breeding site in Tai Po in June. More than a dozen egret and heron hatchlings were killed in the blunder, and a government report released on Friday said the staff involved lacked common sense. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department also admitted that they had no guidelines on wildlife protection for tree management work. But conservation officer Woo Ming-chuan from the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, told Priscilla Ng that it really doesn't take specialist knowledge to know when to stop pruning:
Emperor Akihito to abdicate in April 2019  Listenfacebook
A special panel chaired by the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has set a date for the planned abdication of Emperor Akihito – April 30, 2019. The abdication will be the first in 200 years in Japan's royal family. A law was passed in June approving the move. Emperor Akihito's elder son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will succeed him. Annemarie Evans asked our Tokyo correspondent Julian Ryall how the date was decided:
