Veteran unionist welcomes possible extension of maternity leave  Listenfacebook
The government is considering footing part of the bill in extending maternity leave, to try to reduce opposition from the business sector. Currently, mothers are entitled to have 10 weeks off work, fully paid by their employers. The government hopes to increase this to 14 weeks and is studying whether it can subsidise the cost for the extra weeks. The Secretary General of the Confederation of Trade Unions, Lee Cheuk-yan, told Annemarie Evans that it was good news for female employees:
Sports organisers urged to reduce plastic waste  Listenfacebook
The environmental group, Green Earth, has urged organisers of sports events to stop giving out bottled water to help reduce plastic waste. The group said it found 12 of 15 local running events it surveyed offered bottled water to race contestants. Nine events did not provide any water-refilling stations. The group’s Executive Director, Edwin Lau, told Jim Gould how serious the problem was:

Floodwaters are slowly receding in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where hundreds of thousands of people remain in relief camps. More than 350 people have been killed since the monsoon started in June. The aid effort is now focusing on bringing food and medicine to displaced people. RTHK’s Delhi correspondent, Murali Krishnan, spoke to Annemarie Evans:
