The chairman of Hong Kong Television Network, Ricky Wong, is seriously considering running in the Legislative Council election in September, according to Commercial Radio showhost, Stephen Chan.
Chan on Wednesday morning quoted sources as saying that Wong was thinking of running in the direct election, and plans to meet the media in the afternoon.
But Wong refused to confirm or deny the report. He said in a text message that "everyone needs to think about Hong Kong's future in light of the worsening political situation". Wong also said he does not support functional constituency elections.
A representative of Wong confirmed that the tycoon was arranging to meet reporters later today.
In an interview with the iMoney magazine in late January, Wong said he thinks he has more than a 50 percent chance of winning a seat in the council, but gave up the idea after careful consideration.
"What's the point of running? What can you do in there [Legislative Council]....I can't see how it's useful", he said.
