Hong Kong’s Yang Qianyu has won the women's Asian Highway Cycling Championships held in Bahrain.

It was the first time a Hong Kong cyclist has won the event. The seven-lap road race covers nearly 90 kilometres.

Hong Kong's other riders, Meng Zhaojuan and Diao Xiaojuan, finished 10th and 12th respectively.

Earlier, Pang Yao won a silver medal in the women's individual time trial while Cheung King-lok finished third in the men's time trial.

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Lau Kong-wah, congratulated Yang on her victory.

He said: "Yang Qianyu showed exemplary performance in terms of technique and fitness. Her achievement in winning a gold medal is well deserved. I hope she and her teammates will reach new heights in the competitions ahead".
