Former Occupy student leaders Joshua Wong, Nathan Law and Alex Chow, are back in court again to challenge their jail sentences for the 2014 storming of Civic Square.

The Court of Final Appeal is to decide whether the prison terms of six to eight months, handed down after the government appealed against their non-custodial sentences, were in fact appropriate.

All three activists were released on bail pending their appeal.

Before the hearings started, Law said his feelings were complicated.

"From past experience, the court is not valuing the motives of the participants in non-violent resistance'" he said.

Wong said he hoped if he was sent back to prison, it would motivate more Hong Kong people to support their cause.

"I hope even if I am inside the prison, I can vote to support my team mate," he said, referring to Demosisto's Agnes Chow who hopes to run in a Legco by-election in March.

Wong also faces a possible jail sentence on Wednesday for obstructing the clearance of a major protest encampment in 2014, a charge to which he pleaded guilty. (Additional reporting by AFP)
