ICAC Commissioner Simon Peh said on Wednesday that there are criminals wanted for corruption charges hiding in Hong Kong, and a "legal loophole" must be plugged to enable the authorities extradite them.

Joining a long list of prominent people who have come out to back the government on the contentious changes to the fugitives ordinance, the top graft-buster repeated the government's stance that the city should not be allowed to become a safe haven for overseas criminals.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a symposium to fight corruption, the ICAC chief said the move to allow the transfer of criminals on a case-by-case basis to anywhere in the world should not undermine the agency's cooperation with its global counterparts.

Reports have said that some countries, like Germany, may review their extradition treaties with Hong Kong if the SAR's law changes are passed.
