Forced out of roads around the Legislative Council, hundreds of protesters demanding the withdrawal of the government's extradition bill moved into Central on Wednesday night.

They brought traffic to a standstill at two places on Connaught Road Central.

The demonstrators, some wearing masks and goggles, sat in the middle of the road by Pedder Street and a number of cars were also parked up haphazardly. A couple of buses were left stranded in the area.

More people gathered on overhead walkways in the area.

A larger crowd was blocking Connaught Road Central by City Hall. The police set up a defensive line, but it was some distance away from the protesters.

But after 1am, the protest numbers started to dwindle significantly.

Meanwhile, a standoff was continuing between police and protesters around Queensway and Hennessey Road in Admiralty. An attempt to disperse the crowd there with tear gas at around 10pm didn't work and the demonstrators just regrouped.

Admiralty MTR Station had been closed earlier in the evening and passengers using a number of lines were told to expect longer than usual travelling times.
