Former chief executive CY Leung has weighed in with criticism of the protesters who threw objects at the police from height during the violent clashes in Sha Tin on Sunday.

The police said protesters had hurled bricks, umbrellas and helmets at officers when they advanced towards protesters gathered in the streets of Sha Tin. The force said that’s why they entered the shopping centres in order to stop them.

Writing in his Facebook page, the vice-chairman of Beijing’s top advisory body said the police can’t sit by and do nothing if there are objects being thrown from height.

"If we stay silent over the police being targeted today, would you accept if it was the protesters who are hurled with objects from a height while the police stand aside tomorrow?" Leung asked.

He further asked if Hongkongers still want the city to have the label of "world’s safest city".
