Riot police fired multiple rounds of tear gas at protesters in Sheung Wan on Sunday night, but failed to disperse the crowd who threw bricks and other objects at officers.

The police finally came face to face with hundreds of protesters near the Shun Tak Centre at around 10pm, almost two hours after the force announced a clearance operation following vandalism at Beijing's liaison office.

Scores of officers flooded into Connaught Road Central, and before long they were firing tear gas at protesters who had raised their umbrellas and moved towards the police line.

The protesters threw various objects at the police, including the force's own tear gas canisters.

An RTHK reporter said she saw what appeared to be a container full of bricks, which protesters quickly tried to hide from her view with umbrellas.

Legislator Ted Hui said some reporters had been injured by objects hurled by protesters.

Undaunted by the tear gas, the crowd advanced at officers again and again with makeshift shields and brandishing various objects as weapons, while a number of small fires were burning in the road.

Earlier in the evening, a number of protesters had also thrown objects and sprayed graffiti at Central Police Station, breaking some windows there.
