The MTR Corporation says it won't be running overnight services this Mid-Autumn Festival like it normally does, "in light of the recent situation".

The railway operator said on Thursday that it had made the decision after carrying out a risk assessment with relevant government departments.

Nevertheless, the corporation said, it will step up the frequency of trains on various lines from 3pm on Friday, until stations close at the usual time in the early hours of the morning.

Radical anti-government protesters have started to target MTR stations in recent weeks, vandalising various facilities and damaging ticket machines and turnstiles.

Their anger towards the railway operator was sparked by a decision to close stations near planned protest sites, a move MTR bosses took after coming under fire from mainland media which accused the company of facilitating the protests.

The corporation also obtained a court injunction banning any actions inside stations that disrupt operations.

A statement issued by the rail complany explaining Friday's arrangements also said it would like to wish passengers a joyful Mid-Autumn Festival "and a relaxing weekend".
