Democratic Party legislator Ted Hui was arrested on Sunday evening in North Point after being accused of obstructing police.

Large groups of riot police had been in the area trying to disperse protesters and curious onlookers after a series of brawls in the area.

A large group of officers had been surrounding a couple both wearing the black shirts favoured by anti-government demonstrators, when Hui arrived at the scene with a loudhailer to appeal to police not to abuse their powers, and release them.

The woman had broken down and had been repeatedly telling the police that she lived in the area and just wanted to go home. But the police countered that the couple had been yelling, and that's why they were stopped.

Officers also repeatedly warned Hui to back off and leave the area, saying he had no special powers despite his status as a legislator. They then accused him of obstructing police and brought him away on a police van.

A post on Hui's Facebook page later said the legislator had been arrested, and lawyers are following up on the matter.
