Two major pro-Beijing parties have raised concerns about the upcoming district council elections, saying they are worried about whether security and fairness can be ensured.

The biggest pro-establishment party, the DAB, said many of its members’ offices have been vandalised by protesters during the current anti-government agitation.

Party chairwoman Starry Lee said she still hopes the district council elections can be held as scheduled next month.

She said many of her party members are interested in taking part in the coming polls, but officials have to ensure peaceful conduct.

"We would like to urge the government, especially the responsible government officials, to make sure there is a safe, fair and peaceful environment for all the candidates and for all people to cast their vote," Lee said.

The Federation of Trade Unions also raised concerns about security, saying offices of its district council members were vandalised over the long weekend.

The pro-Beijing party said some of its campaign staff worry for their safety when working outside because of protest violence. It also called on the government to explore all means to ensure that the polls are fair.
