Carrie Lam in her policy address on Wednesday is to announce a HK$2 billion subsidy for private estates to install charging facilities for electric cars.

The Environment Secretary, Wong Kam-sing, claimed that under the subsidy scheme 60,000 parking spaces with such facilities will be online in three years' time.

Wong said with this new policy and measures like gross floor area (GFA) concessions for builders implemented earlier, he expects a quarter of the city’s car spaces will be equipped with sockets in the coming years.

Mark Webb-Johnson of Charged Hong Kong, an association aimed at promoting electric vehicles, welcomed the plan, saying the move will help grow the number of electric vehicles in the SAR.
