Around a hundred students at Polytechnic University have staged an hour-long protest on campus against the institution's president, Professor Teng Jin-guang,who refused to shake hands with students who wore masks during a graduation ceremony on Sunday.

The students accused Teng of failing to respect diversity and different political views on campus, and questioned if he was clamping down on freedom of expression by ordering the clearing of the school's "Lennon wall".

In a statement, the students' union of the university had expressed regret at Teng's stance on Sunday. It had asked students attending various graduation ceremonies to wear white ribbons and black masks to register their protest against the university president's decisions.

Many of the students who took part in Wednesday's protest wore Guy Fawkes masks, saying they represented their commitment to stand up against oppression.

They also chanted slogans like "Reclaim Hong Kong, revolution of our times" and sang songs, including Glory to Hong Kong, which are popular with protesters agitating against the government.
