Horrific videos were circulating on social media on Monday showing a man being set on fire following an argument with a group of people, with a source telling RTHK that the victim is in a critical condition in hospital.
The police said they had received multiple reports of the incident at around 1pm in Ma On Shan.
The videos show a middle-aged man in a green T-shirt, with some kind of injury to his head, shouting at several young people that they are not Chinese, and that they are actually British.
The small crowd shouts that the man should go back to the Greater Bay area, and they also tell him not to hit anyone.
At least one person then lunges forward and pours some kind of liquid over the man and he is set on fire.
Flames engulf the man's T-shirt and shoes and part of the ground of a pedestrian footbridge.
But as the man moves one way, the camera pans in the opposite direction filming people running from the scene.
It's not clear from the footage what happens to the victim next. But pictures shared on social media appeared to show that the man had pulled his T-shirt off, and although he was able to walk, he seemed to have burns to his torso.
