Polytechnic University President Teng Jin-Guang said on Monday morning that he has reached a deal with police in which officers will suspend all use of force against protesters inside the Poly U campus, on the condition that the demonstrators don’t attack first.

In a video message released shortly after police entered the main entrance of the university, making a number of arrests, Teng urged everyone who remains on campus to leave peacefully.

Protesters inside had showered the entrance with petrol bombs when police made their advance at around 5.30am, setting off a number of fires – one of which sent a towering plume of black smoke spiraling into the sky.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control after they arrived.

Teng assured anyone who agrees to leave peacefully that he will look out for their best interests even if they are arrested.

“We have also received permission from the police for you to leave the campus peacefully and I will personally accompany you to the police station to ensure that your case will be fairly processed”, he said.

“I hope that you will accept the proposed temporary suspension of force, and leave the campus in a peaceful manner.”

Following the chaotic scenes earlier in the morning, police appear to have pulled back somewhat. Many protesters though, remain on campus. Some are sitting down, resting, while others are walking around -- some apparently carrying petrol bombs with them, and others holding shields or long rods.
