Parts of Kowloon resembled a war zone on Monday night, with petrol bombs exploding amid thick clouds of choking tear-gas.

Thousands of people turned out on the main roads, to show support for those still trapped inside the Polytechnic University.

Many defiant black-clad protesters gathered on Nathan Road in Jordan, hurling dozens of petrol bombs as they charged towards the police cordon line. Officers responded with repeated rounds of tear gas.

Water cannon were also deployed, spraying water with blue dye to try to disperse protester - but many on Gascoigne road were undeterred.

In Tsim Sha Tsui East, scores of people turned up, apparently heeding online calls to show their support to those trapped in the Polytechnic University siege.

The crowd spilled over onto Salisbury road - where riot police again fired tear gas.
