About 30 protesters walked out of the Polytechnic University campus on Tuesday morning as numbers dwindled following a days-long, violent stand-off with police.

Reporters at the scene said the protesters surrendered themselves to police at about 10am. The people leaving the campus all sought immediate help from paramedics, who gave out foil blankets and brought wheelchairs for those who needed them.

Speaking at about the same time, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said about 100 people remained in the campus, while more than 600 had already left. Of those who had left, about 200 were minors.

Fierce clashes had broken out around the campus since Sunday night. The area remained surrounded by riot police.

About 100 people left the campus in the early hours of Tuesday, including minors who were accompanied out by secondary school headteachers. Those over the age of 16 were arrested while minors were allowed to go but had their identities taken and could still face prosecution later.

A heavy police presence remained across Hung Hom and Tsim Sha Tsui on Tuesday morning. People arriving for work had their identities checked.
