Leading DAB figures bowed in apology on Monday morning and chairwoman Starry Lee announced she had offered to resign over the pro-Beijing's party's thrashing in the district council elections.

Lee said the party's central committee had refused to accept her resignation, with colleague Horace Cheung saying the drubbing was not Lee's fault, but a collective failure on the DAB's part.

The party fielded 181 candidates for Sunday's polls, but won only 21 seats.

Lee narrowly defeated Leung Kwok-hung of the League of Social Democrats, but Cheung failed to get re-elected, as did other party heavyweights Holden Chow, Vincent Cheng, and Edward Lau.

"We hope that we will have a reflection and do much better in the coming challenge. Therefore, we unanimously decided that our chairwoman should remain as the leader of our party to face the coming challenge," Cheung said.

The DAB leaders said campaigning for the election had been difficult because their offices and volunteers had been attacked.

They thanked those who did vote for the party and said the defeated candidates feel sad and guilty that they won't be able to represent their voters.

The DAB added that it is going to review its election strategies.
