Protests in the Central district stretched into the new week as dozens of people chanted slogans against the government and surrounded New People's Party leader Regina Ip who was there at the time.

Workers who came out of their offices in the area at lunchtime raised slogans like "five demands, not one less" and highlighted the plight of those still trapped inside Polytechnic University because of a police siege.

As the crowds swelled, Ip was spotted in the area and some people surrounded and started shouting at her.

Some protesters called her a "traitor" and accused her of selling out Hong Kong. The pro-government lawmaker had to be escorted to a taxi by nearly 20 riot police officers.

A large crowd then took over the road and started an impromptu march, but were quickly dispersed by riot police who drove them back to the pavement.
