The government filed an appeal on Monday seeking to overturn last week's High Court ruling that its anti-mask law was unconstitutional.

In its submission, the government said it's reasonable and necessary to impose the law to protect people, adding that it would only impose limited restrictions on rights and freedoms.

It also said it hopes the Court of Appeal would agree that the law is necessary in the face of rising violence, and that people who carry out such violence should not have the privacy protected.

The High Court had ruled that the Emergency Regulations Ordinance - invoked by the government to introduce the ban - was incompatible with the Basic Law.

However on Friday it ruled that the ban would be reinstated for seven days, as the judgement goes through the appeals process.
