A deputy to the National People’s Congress and former chief secretary, Henry Tang, on Friday refrained from commenting on a video published by his niece, Stefani Kuo, in which she recites a poem in support of anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.

Responding to media enquiries through his spokesman, Tang said Kuo was expressing her personal views.

Kuo, a playwright and actress, is currently based in New York.

In the widely circulated video, she recites her poem titled 2047, in which she recounts the fear and pain of protesters who are agitating against the government.

The poem accuses the United States of pleasing China for economic benefits and criticises the United Nations for not supporting Hong Kong.

According to a report from Taiwan, this was a poem Kuo wrote for a performance in the US and then later decided to record as a video. The video had attracted tens of thousands of views on YouTube.
