All eyes are on what orders President Xi Jinping will give Chief Executive Carrie Lam, as she arrives in Beijing for her third annual duty visit.

Lam is first expected to meet Vice Premier Han Zheng – who's the state leader in charge of Hong Kong affairs – on Saturday.

The embattled leader is then scheduled to meet Xi as well as Premier Li Keqiang on Monday to discuss the latest situation in Hong Kong, following six months of civil unrest.

While Lam didn’t answer reporters’ questions when she arrived in the capital, some analysts believe top Beijing leaders will make use of the opportunity to brief Lam on issues ranging from protecting national security and rebuilding ties with the pro-establishment camp after their crushing defeat in the district council polls, to imposing sanctions on American organisations.

During a meeting with the president in Shanghai last month, Xi had dismissed speculation that there would be a change in leadership in Hong Kong by expressing "a high degree of trust" in Lam. He had said Beijing fully recognised the work of her administration, adding that the top priority was to end the violence and restore calm in the city.

Meanwhile, the SAR leader says she remains committed to communicating with Hong Kong people, even though she’s only held one community dialogue session so far.

Lam wrote on her Facebook page that her administration is trying hard to plan the next session, but stressed there are a number of problems to overcome, such as finding the right venue and preventing those who participate from being doxxed.

She added that her top officials will organise their own Facebook Live sessions very soon to listen to people's views.
