Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Saturday met dozens of pro-establishment candidates who were defeated in last month's District Council elections.

The gathering at Government House lasted for around two hours and those who attended it were tight-lipped about what was being discussed.

One of those who were present, Judy Chan from the New People's Party, simply told reporters that the CE had thanked them for their contributions in society.

The pro-Beijing camp suffered a crushing defeat in last month's polls, losing control of 17 out of 18 District Councils.

The elections were widely seen as a referendum of the ongoing protest movement, and they’ve blamed their loss on the government’s failure to properly handle the anti-extradition crisis.

Rumours were rife that the Chief Executive would appease the defeated councillors by offering them alternative jobs, but the government has dismissed the speculation as unfounded.
