A general manager at Henderson Land, Randy Yu, was on Monday elected as the chairman of Islands District Council, the only council that the pro-government side retains control of.

All the other 17 local councils are now dominated by pro-democracy groups after the historic elections in November.

In the contest for chairmanship, Yu defeated pro-democracy candidate Leung Kwok-ho by ten votes to eight after the contest went into a second round.

The new chairman said he doesn’t think there is any conflict of interest between his two jobs.

"The duty I have within the company has nothing to do with development at all. I look after all the community issues, mainly," said Yu.

"Also in the whole election process I have already told all residents in the constituency that I am an executive of a development company," he said.

Yu also said his company does not own any sites within the whole Islands district.

Mui Wo rural leader Wong Man-hon took the vice chair seat by defeating the Civic Party’s Amy Yung.

Because there are eight rural representatives who automatically get seats on the Islands District Council, the pro-government side still retains a majority here.
