Yuen Long District Council on Tuesday voted to set up a working group to look into the July 21 gang attack at the town's MTR station and to demand answers from the police.

The police force has faced accusations that it colluded with thugs after it took almost 40 minutes for officers to arrive at the station to deal with a string of vicious assaults that put dozens in hospital.

The council, which is now dominated by pro-democracy members since November's elections, also passed a motion demanding the government set up an independent inquiry to look into claims of police brutality.

Councillors said the police would be disrespecting the public if they failed to send represenatives to meetings of the working group.

Tuesday's was the first district council meeting of the new term, and the Democratic Party's Zachary Wong was elected chairman, while Johnny Mak from the Democratic Alliance took the vice chairman spot. Neither position was contested.

Wong began his new role as chairman by asking members to stand in silence as a mark of respect for those who have died during the months of anti-government protests. Several pro-establishment members chose not to stand.
