Officials said on Friday that police were called to a public hospital after a couple who had fallen ill following a trip to Wuhan refused to be put into isolation and fled the site.

The husband and wife had gone to the accident and emergency department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin and had symptoms of fever and respiratory infections.

The Hospital Authority said staff told the couple that they fulfilled the criteria to be placed into isolation in case they have the deadly new virus sweeping the mainland.

"As soon as they knew they had to be isolated, they rushed out of the hospital," said the authority's director for quality and safety, Chung Kin-lai.

Chung said hospital staff immediately called the police.

Officers stopped the couple outside the hospital and brought them back to be isolated.
