Health authorities confirmed late on Friday that a third person had tested positive for the new coronavirus originating in Wuhan, taking the total to five.

The 63-year-old man is the husband of a 62-year-old woman who tested positive for the disease earlier in the day. Another 62-year-old woman tested positive earlier in the day.

The couple are from Wuhan and arrived by high-speed rail on Wednesday. They developed fever over the next two days and were admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin on Thursday.

The couple had been staying with their daughter and her domestic helper at the Lake Silver estate in Ma On Shan. The daughter has also developed a fever and is being kept in isolation at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

The helper, who has no symptoms, has been placed in quarantine at the Lady MacLehose holiday camp in Sai Kung.

The other woman, who is also from Wuhan, arrived by high-speed rail on January 19. She and her husband stayed with their daughter and son-in-law at South Hillcrest in Tuen Mun. The three relatives have shown no symptoms but have been moved to Lady MacLehose for quarantine.

Separately, the United States reported its second case of the new virus. A woman in her 60s who visited Wuhan in late December was taken ill in Chicago.

Health authorities in Nepal on Friday confirmed that a student who returned from Wuhan tested positive for the new coronavirus, becoming the first South Asian country to report the deadly disease.

Two new cases were reported in Singapore on Friday, as well as one each in Japan and South Korea. On the mainland, 26 people had died and more than 800 were confirmed to have the virus. (RTHK/AFP)
