Police fired several cannisters of tear gas late on Saturday night as people took to the streets of Mong Kok on the first day of the Year of the Rat.

The tear gas was fired close to the Langham Place shopping mall at about 11pm after someone threw objects at a police vehicle. Large numbers of people were gathered in the area around Portland Street, where la number of street food hawkers were operating.

Many of those present chanted anti-government slogans. The police said some blocked the road at the junction with Argyle Street.

Officers took several black-clad people away from the scene.

At Lunar New Year in 2016, large-scale clashes erupted in the same area as Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officers, accompanied by police, attempted to close down street food stalls.

Localist Edward Leung was later jailed for six years and a number of others were convicted for their role in events that became known as the "Fishball Revolution".
