Members of Wong Tai Sin District Council on Wednesday accused the government of trying to hinder the operations of councils and degrading their importance.
This came after the Home Affairs Department urged the Wong Tai Sin council to postpone its meetings called to discuss the Wuhan virus outbreak. The officials told the council that it is inappropriate for crowds to gather due to the severity of the epidemic.
The district councillors also cited the Home Affairs Department as saying that its staff won't be working and the council's secretariat can't provide support.
Northern District had also called for a similar meeting but did not get any objection from the government.
Government officials also attended Northern District Council but stayed away from the Wong Tai Sin meeting which went ahead despite the government's objection.
The Wong Tai Sin council said it is the chairman of the council who should be making decisions regarding meetings and accused the Home Affairs Department of overstepping its powers.
It also said some other government department officials were willing to attend the meeting, but were overruled.
