Labour Party lawmaker Fernando Cheung on Sunday said the government will face disastrous consequences unless it moves swiftly to close the border.

The administration has said such a move is discriminatory, and against World Health Organisation guidelines. But speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong programme, Cheung said the failure to implement a ban, despite the threat of a hospital strike, showed its stubbornness.

He pointed out that leading figures in the medical sector had recommended the closure of the border, despite the possible negative social and economic consequences this action might bring.

Cheung said it’s only reasonable to expect that mainlanders who have symptoms would consider coming to Hong Kong to receive treatment, given the SAR's high quality of care in comparison to that of the mainland.

He said the only sensible thing to do is to cut off the influx of mainland visitors altogether, seeing as how the disease has already spread to the rest of China.
