Hong Kong has recorded its 18th confirmed case of the Wuhan virus on Tuesday night, with a 25-year-old man becoming the latest and youngest to be diagnosed in the city. That brings the total of locally acquired infections to five.

Sources said the man lives at Sun Tin Wai Estate in Shatin, and has not travelled over the past 14 days.

He sought treatment at the Prince of Wales Hospital on Monday and was transferred to the Princess Margaret Hospital for isolation treatment.

Earlier on Tuesday, health officials announced that another two people had caught the mainland's new coronavirus while in Hong Kong, and they could not rule out widespread person-to-person transmissions in the city.

One of the cases involved a 60-year-old man, who lives in Kwun Tong, who had been to the doctors on four occasions since late January. The man, who has not been to the mainland recently, later went to two different public hospitals before he was eventually admitted to an isolation ward.

The other case involved a 64-year-old woman who works in a boutique in Jordan. She developed a fever and cough last month and was later placed in isolation after testing positive for the virus.

She has not been to the mainland recently either, and officials say they believe both patients contracted the virus locally.

The Centre for Health Protection warned that it could not rule out "large scale" transmission of the coronavirus in the city.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Centre for Health Protection said they cannot pin down the exact source of the infections for the two latest patients.

The official said this shows the virus may be being transmitted by hidden sources, implying it could be being spread by people who are not showing any signs of the illness.
