The Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Flight Attendants Association on Saturday voted in support of a proposal to go on strike, in a bid to pressure Cathay Pacific into cancelling all flights between Hong Kong and the mainland, in view of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

In a meeting called to decide on taking industrial action, 420 members voted in favour of a strike, 22 opposed and 25 abstained.

The union said there’s a shortage of protective supplies, such as face masks and alcohol hand sanitisers, for flight attendants.

The union’s leader, Rebecca Sy, said members would meet again on Sunday to decide on the exact date of the strike.

Cathay Dragon was still operating flights between Hong Kong and a number of mainland cities as of Saturday, including Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Qingdao and Nanjing, although the airline said it would reduce the capacity of their flights to and from the mainland by half until the end of March.

Many airlines have stopped all flights to the mainland after the coronavirus outbreaks were reported across the country.
