A hotel workers union said on Monday that there is no way hotels can keep track of guests under quarantine as they are not notified about the orders and the visitors are not obliged to tell them about them either.

Under new regulations passed by the government, from last Saturday anyone arriving in Hong Kong from the mainland has to quarantine themselves for 14 days even if they have no signs of illness. Some people, such as airline crew, are exempted from this.

But Hong Kong Hotel Employees Union chairman Alex Tsui said that being as visitors are under no legal obligation to tell the hotel where they are staying that they are subject to the arrangements puts workers and other guests at risk.

Tsui said some hotels are refusing guests seeking to book rooms for 14 days or more, but people could always stay for a few days and then shift to another hotel afterwards.

He said this ambiguity regarding the procedures has left hotel workers confused and concerned. Still, all of them are turning up for work as they fear sackings are around the corner being as the hotel sector is going through a hard time, the union leader said.
