A 62-year-old Hong Kong woman who has contracted the new Covid-19 virus near the epicentre of the outbreak in Hubei province is in a serious condition, the SAR's mainland affairs ministers says.
However Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Patrick Nip says most of the 10 Hong Kong people who've been diagnosed with Covid in Hubei are in stable condition. Seven of the patients are in Wuhan, where the virus was first identified in December.
Nip rejected criticism that the government had been too slow to inform the public here of the Hong Kong people's conditions. The administration first revealed on Wednesday that the 10 had fallen ill.
He said the announcement was made "within days" of receiving the news.
"But my point is that it's not our practice to make such an announcement because all of our announcements concerning information relating to the fight against the disease, we focus on information relating to Hong Kong situations," Nip said.
"That's why we do it in a daily briefing. But surely if there are concerns, there is interest in such information, we will be happy to provide that."
More than 66,000 people have now been infected with Covid on the mainland, the vast majority of them in Hubei. In Hong Kong, 56 people have been diagnosed with the disease.
