Beijing could postpone this year's session of the National People's Congress, state media reports, as the mainland continues to battle the spread of the deadly new coronavirus.

Xinhua News Agency said a draft decision to postpone next month's meeting will be discussed by the National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) next Monday.

The parliamentary meeting of the NPC has been held annually in March for the past 35 years.

Xinhua said the NPCSC would also "review a draft decision on banning illegal wildlife trade and eliminating the bad habits of eating wild animals to guarantee people's lives, health and safety."

In a speech on February 3, President Xi Jinping had vowed to tackle the trade in wildlife and said eating such animals must be stopped.

The new coronavirus has been linked to a market in Wuhan, Hubei province, that also sells meat from a range of wild animals.
