For the first time in many years, Manimala Dharmangadan could not help make a cake for her daughter’s 11th birthday.

She was forced to keep her distance and watch attentively while the girl measured out the flour, and prepared the icing for her own cake.

It’s part of the price Dr Manimala has to pay for doing what she does – she’s an associate consultant at the intensive care unit of Princess Margaret Hospital, and has been treating coronavirus patients since early this month.

She takes her meals separately, and mainly isolates herself in her room when she’s at home. It’s a part of a sensible and proportionate set of precautions she takes to minimise the risk of infecting her loved ones.
