The Financial Secretary has allocated an extra HK$600 million to the Hospital Authority for it to hire staff, implement new measures and enhance current services.

Paul Chan added that the government will make sure health authorities have the financial resources they need to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

The government had come under criticism over a lack of sufficient safety gear for frontline staff at hospitals, and thousands of medical workers went on a strike over this earlier this month.

Chan said the government has also committed resources to help the Hospital Authority retain staff, given a surge in demand for public hospital services in recent years.

The secretary said the government is adding HK$3 billion to the recurrent funding for the Hospital Authority after considering population growth and demographic changes, putting the total recurrent funding this year at HK$75 billion.
