Several members of RTHK's Programme Staff Union on Friday handed a petition to the stations' board of advisers urging it to "stop interfering" in the broadcaster’s editorial decisions.
They staged a protest as the board met at RTHK's headquarters in Kowloon Tong amid an ongoing dispute between the public broadcaster and the city's police force.
Police Commissioner Chris Tang has accused the station of misleading its audience regarding the work of his officers, blasting recent episodes of the satirical show Headliner that have poked fun at the police.
The union’s chairwoman, Gladys Chiu, said their main concern was a proposal by the board's chairman to set up a three-member working group to look into complaints about RTHK's output. She said this is not a job for the advisers.
“Complaint handling is not the scope of work of the board of advisers. They only listen to reports of the complaints and give advice when they see fit,” she said.
Chiu also accused the board’s chairman, Eugene Chan, of putting pressure on the broadcaster.
But Chan said it is the board’s responsibility to give advice to the Director of Broadcasting. He added that he would not interfere in the station’s daily operations.
After a meeting with Director of Broadcasting Leung Ka-wing, Chan said all of RTHK's output – without exception – has to provide accurate and unbiased information in accordance with its charter.
He denied that the advisers are intervening with editorial decisions over specific programmes.
“The information that we’ve given to the Director of Broadcasting regarding Headliner is all in terms of the principles. We haven’t got involved with the actual running of the programme … who’s actually shooting it. We haven’t done anything like that. That’s not our remit,” he said.
