Top microbiologist Ho Pak-leung on Saturday urged the government to apply to the UK the same quarantine restrictions and travel alerts it announced for people arriving from Europe's Schengen Area from Tuesday.

The head of the University of Hong Kong's Centre for Infection said there is a lot of human traffic between the UK and Hong Kong, and people coming from there should have to isolate themselves at home for 14 days as well.

Ho also urged those studying in the UK to arrange to return to Hong Kong, and isolate themselves at home for two weeks. He says the outbreak situation in the UK isn't very different from that of the rest of Europe.

The home quarantine requirements were announced late on Friday, hours before new regulations come in that will force people travelling from Italy and parts of Spain, Germany and France, as well as Japan's Hokkaido, into government quarantine centre.

The countries in question are: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Republic of Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Countries not covered by the agreement include the Republic of Ireland, which is outside the Schengen Area.
