The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department on Thursday said a pet German Shepherd dog, that is now in quarantine after its owner was confirmed as having the coronavirus, has repeatedly tested positive for Covid-19. It's the second pet dog to test positive for the disease.

Last month, a 17-year-old Pomeranian dog, which has since died, recorded a weak positive result after being repeatedly tested for the virus.

The German Shepherd and the owner's other dog, a mixed breed, were sent to a quarantine facility on Wednesday. The mixed breed dog hasn't tested positive and neither dog is showing any signs of the disease.

The AFCD said they would continue to monitor and test both dogs. It added that there was no evidence that pet animals can be a source of Covid-19 for humans or that this virus can cause the disease in dogs.

The department said under no circumstances should pet owners abandon their pets.
