Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui has called on people not to surrender in their fight for democracy and freedoms in Hong Kong.

Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong on Sunday, Hui said the National People's Congress's decision to implement national security legislation in the SAR poses severe threats to people's rights and freedoms, saying Hong Kongers could easily be subject to arbitrary arrests.

He added that the fact that Beijing will be allowed to establish "enforcement mechanisms" in the city was also extremely worrying.

"The Liaison Office is already notorious for constantly interfering with Hong Kong’s internal affairs, including Legislative Council elections; another office in Hong Kong in the form of an enforcement mechanism will only enjoy even more power," Hui said.

"If cross-border law enforcement is allowed under the law, they will bring in Mainland's twisted understanding of rule of law and their infamous law enforcement ways to Hong Kong. This will pose a serious threat to Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms."

Critics of the security law say it will erode democratic freedoms, including freedom of speech and the media in the SAR, and the US government has announced that Hong Kong would lose its special status because it was losing its autonomy..

However, the Hong Kong government has accused President Trump and the State Department of continuing to "smear and demonise" Beijing's right to safeguard national security in the SAR.
