A cleaner has been ordered to serve 160 hours of community service for obstructing a police officer at work during a protest in Sham Shui Po last August.

Ho Eng-leng was found guilty of obstructing an officer in the due execution of his duty, after he blocked a policeman who was going to check the identity of a youngster.

Pleading for leniency, Ho's lawyer told the court that his client had been detained for more than 10 days.

The magistrate at Kowloon City Court noted that although Ho had a criminal record, it was back in 2014 and he had never committed similar crimes before.

The judge also pointed out that community service is similar to a jail term and is not a lenient punishment.
