  • Cash-handout registration begins across Hong Kong
Around two million people applied for the government's HK$10,000 cash handout on the first day of registration on Sunday, with the vast majority of them registering electronically via their banks, and around 8,000 using the post office's website.

Around 1,000 bank branches and 120 post offices across the territory opened from 9am to 5pm to accept paper registration forms.

In the morning, some 20 people were seen lining up outside a bank in Mong Kok waiting to hand in their application forms.

The first in the queue was an elderly woman, who had arrived more than two hours before the bank's scheduled opening time. She said she was excited about the handout and planned to spend the money on food.

Others told RTHK that they would save up the cash.

Those who have registered online are expected to receive the money from July 8 and people who submitted paper forms will have to wait until at least July 20.

The handout was announced in February's budget to help off-set the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic.
