Four police groups on Tuesday offered their full support for Beijing's move to impose a national security law on Hong Kong, citing anti-government protests and "terrorism" as showing the need for such legislation in the SAR.

The Junior Police Officers' Association, Superintendents' Association, Police Inspectors' Association and Overseas Inspectors' Association issued a joint statement backing the law which will cover secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.

They said that in the past year, anti-government protests have swept Hong Kong and plunged the city into unprecedented turmoil.

Political ideals degenerated into local terrorism, with the instigators exploiting gaps in national security in Hong Kong without facing any punishment under the law, the associations said.

They said some opinion leaders had gone as far as visiting foreign governments to call for sanctions against the SAR.

The statement said the police force will cooperate in implementing fair and impartial enforcement of the new law to protect Hong Kong's interests, and will firmly move to safeguard the overall national security situation.
