Police have charged a 36-year-old bus driver with careless driving. He was arrested on Sunday on Nathan Road, where there had been an anti-government protest on what would have been Legco election day.

The man had been behind the wheel of a number 970 bus, operated by New World First Bus, when police arrested him on suspicion of dangerous driving and possession of an offensive weapon. Officers said they had found a spanner in his bag, after taking him to a police station. He was freed on bail on Monday.

In a statement, New World First Bus said it wouldn't comment because legal proceedings were under way. The company said it would provide appropriate assistance to the driver and it believed the courts would make a fair and just ruling.

The man will appear at Kowloon City Court on Tuesday.
