The government is seeking HK$1 billion in funding from the Legislative Council to set up an indemnity fund to provide financial support for those who experience serious complications from Covid-19 jabs.
The undersecretary for food and health, Chui Tak-yi, said on Wednesday that authorities will soon announce details of its vaccination programme, which is expected to start next month.
A paper submitted to Legco’s Finance Committee by the Food and Health Bureau revealed that people who suffer serious side effects could receive up to HK$3 million, while families could get up to HK$2.5 million in fatal cases.
The government stressed the fund is aimed at providing financial help to those affected as early as possible, adding that victims can still take action against the manufacturer of the vaccine, or other parties deemed accountable.
Lawmakers are expected to discuss the funding application next Friday.
